It's funny the comments you posted about the OB's. While pregnant with my son, I had asked my Dr. when would we need to start discussing the birth plan, looking at details, etc, and he gave me pretty much exactly what you said about not being disappointed and that birth plans never really work out so really, we didn't need to talk about one and all those websites you read about are a little extreme. I brushed it off, but now know that I definitely should not have.
Obviously, a lot of unexpected things happened with the birth of my son, thankfully, a C-Section was not one of them. I really hope that things will just happen naturally with this one and he listens to what I want. Because my Dr. has a fabulous bedside manner otherwise. But, I would like to avoid pitocin and an episiotomy if at all possible. So thank you for this birth plan. I will definitely be jotting down some notes! :)
Thank you for sharing Courtney!
May I ask why you don't want the erythromycin ointment in your baby's eyes? Also, are you doing a delayed vaccination schedule or do you just not vaccinate?
I like the part in your birth plan about being able to labor down and push when you feel it. I hate it when a woman is complete and the labor nurse is counting for them to push and they don't even feel like they have to. I'm going to talk to my OB about this tomorrow I think.
Thanks for posting Courtney, this is SO helpful. I was also curious about the eye treatment.
Megs--I think they all must talk about it at conventions or something because they all say the same thing!! lol
As far as the eye ointment goes, I don't have an std so she doesn't need it :). I want her to be able to open her pretty little eyes and look at her mama and dada (also helps to be able to see for latch for nursing). Here is an article that explains why they do the drops:

We vaccinate on a pretty normal schedule...I just don't like the idea of my new baby getting a totally unnecessary shot when it is of no benefit to her(she doesn't need protection from getting a std as a newborn!). They started giving these (hepatitis b vac) to every newborn in the hospital much like the drops because some moms have stds that could be given to baby during childbirth.
Thank you for posting this. I am trying to be more informed with my birth plan this time around. I didn't have one at all last time!
I made a plan for Charlotte and when I got to the hospital I am not even sure they had it. I believe it got tossed out with the trash. My OB didn't seem to care too much for it either. With DC I honestly forgot. I know that is horrible, but with both of mine being so close in age and the fact that they didn't even have it my first time around I just didn't fool with it. Ironcially, his birth was more natural than I planned - seeing as I was at 8cm when I got to the hospital and I had him 20 minutes later. There wasn't time to do anything but push out a baby. So glad you are prepared, though. Laboring in the car after planning to have an epidural was a scary experience. Regardless, my little guy made it here and we both did wonderfully. Can't wait to see baby Kate. :)
Great Birth Plan! Could not agree with you more on EVERY point!
